What is CAPITAL CONNECTIONS?

CAPITAL CONNECTIONS (CC) is an educational initiative with the goal of educating high school students on the global economic events that are so relevant to our lives, but schools often neglect to teach fully.  On this podcast, we aim to explore the intersection between politics, economics, and everyday life.  We examine why the flow of money between countries and companies matters through the lens of current events.  Every episode includes a synthesis of the history of the topic, written and researched by host Eliana Svilik, before introducing an interview with an expert on the subject.  Past topics include the impact of climate change on economic globalization with Mr. Thomas Friedman (Pulitzer Prize winner, NYT reporter, and author), the Russia-Ukraine War with Dr. Robert Person (Associate Professor of International Relations at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point), the supply chain crisis with Mr. Peter Goodman (NYT global economics correspondent),and the rise of China as an economic superpower with Ms. Susan Thornton (former U.S. State Department diplomat who specializes in Asia and Eurasia).

What is The Intersection?

The Intersection is the partner editorial to the CAPITAL CONNECTIONS podcast.  Here, one can find the "backgrounds" featured on each episode of CAPITAL CONNECTIONS.  Also available are additional articles and writings by Eliana Svilik, all focused on the domestic and global economies.

Meet the Writer, Editor, Host, and Producer of CAPITAL CONNECTIONS

My name is Eliana Svilik, and I am a junior at Cleveland High School's Humanities Magnet in Reseda, California.  My primary interests lie in the global economy, which I cover in my podcast, CAPITAL CONNECTIONS.  For each episode, I research, write, and present my audience with a lengthy background on a topic related to the world economy. Then, I interview an expert on the subject.  I am also deeply interested in the intersection of history, foreign relations, and economics, with a focus on Eastern Europe.  Under the mentorship of Professor Petrovsky-Shtern, who teaches courses on Ukrainian history and culture at Northwestern University, I conducted extensive research on the evolution of Ukrainian politics, economics, and Ukrainian-Russian relations post-1991.  My interest in the field led me to write a research paper that examines the impact of the corrupt presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, a Ukrainian politician, on the development of Ukraine’s political character, economic systems, and distinct national identity.  In my spare time, since 2018, I have volunteered year-round for Wise Readers to Leaders, an organization based in Los Angeles that works with underprivileged elementary and middle schoolers to improve literacy.  I am also on the board of the Model United Nations Club and PAGE Club at my school.
